Excellent post on a topic which is cropping up a lot in my corner of the business world.

The thing about being presented with a sinking ship is that you know better than to try to rearrange its deck chairs. Inevitably the businesses which are struggling to keep their doors open want to believe that you're some sort of magician who can wave a magic wand and turn their business around like a TV show. Ultimately I cannot be a social welfare service for businesses which failed to adapt.

It's always the way though, isn't it? Wherever there's people, there's someone trying to get them to buy something by virtually any means.

The ease of distribution that social and business networks allow is just too tempting for some "network marketers" (I hate using that term because they are a blight on real marketers) unfortunately. I'd suggest that about 90% of the internet is noise; the skill is separating the clear signal from the static!

Well said. I suspect I get the same emails too, along with an increasing and annoying volume of "friend" invitations from people who think having swapped one email with me last year makes me their "friend".

To be fair, it is not limited to LinkedIn. I unsubscribed from a well-known marketing guru's list after one of his emails was promoting a co-branded "instant five page web site" service. Nice little earner for him, but I spend much of my professional energy helping clients get away from quickie-sites-in-a-box.

There, as with your LinkedIn contact, the individual's need to promote himself as a serious professional ultimately lost out to the bottom line. Less noise, more signal, please.

I have come across this issue many times over the last few years. Clients think the more folk you email the better your chances of success are. Wrong wrong wrong. I try hard to explain that they would be much better emailing 50 folk who care rather than 5000 that might.

Jordan,

As a marketing professional at SME level, I find your blog fantastic and a real eye opener.

I too agree simple is better. Although, your comment - "If you’re looking for 100% guarantees, buy a hoover." is clearly wrong... my hoover doesn't pick up anything. :)

Regards

Must say you're a man with words. Do like the slightly corny: dream, run, race big, but to plan small it's easy to miss out on the last bit. To me, reason one and three are the one and same thing, if you don't have good people around you there is no one to let go to and you stop growing. But then again, growing just for the sake of growing is rather pointless as well.

See you Friday.
